He calls himself selfish
when he steals air from my lungs
breathing my strength in and out
for his survival
and I try to make him believe that
his presence is my life’s pulse
without him
coursing through my veins
my heart would fail
I sense him sliding into my thoughts
easing into the beat of their silence
and feel him sidle up to my reassurances
seeking his comfort there
